Scott Hill is known for his
quietly beautiful atmospheric landscape paintings in oil. Hill’s
paintings evoke a sense of history. He has been influenced most in his
work by nineteenth-century landscape paintings and by his memories of
the mountain landscapes of north Georgia, where he grew up and where he
still resides. The sense of the past in Hill’s work is enhanced by his
use of the centuries-old technique of glazing. Hill also uses a limited
color palette, creating a serene yet visually interesting effect.
Although Hill’s work hearkens back to an earlier age, it is
nevertheless unmistakably modern. Many of Hill’s paintings include a
solitary figure isolated within a beautiful yet overwhelming setting.
The anonymity of these figures and the composition of the paintings
convey a modern sensibility. |
