Shelley Jordon (b. 1954) is a Northwest artist who brings
still-life painting back to center stage. Concerned with the psychology
of everyday objects, Jordon brings out unexpected beauty from the
humble objects, odds and ends, and domestic items that fill her
compositions. The arrangements are usually glimpsed against a
landscape, natural or industrial, giving the compositions a monumental
quality.
In 1994, Jordon was a visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. There, she discovered examples of an ancient Roman painting tradition called humilia, mural-sized paintings of domestic scenes and interiors that exerted a significant influence on the development of her large scale still lifes. During the past few years, the artist's painting have begun to reflect the diffused Northwest light which illuminates her Portland studio. Jordon received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York City and earned an MFA at Brooklyn College, City University of New York. She is currently an associate professor of art at Oregon State University. An illustrated exhibition catalogue is available in the museum store. |
